Harvested another head of broccoli

I definitely need more broccoli plants next year!!!  Is it too late to start some from seed for fall planting???

My broccoli is just beautiful this year!!!

In case anyone wants to know... you CAN eat more than your broccoli heads!  Did you know that the leaves are edible too?

And... you can even add them to your green smoothie!

  1. We're seeing the next generation of heads from this first plant of ours. They won't be as big as the one we harvested on Saturday, but together they'll make a meal. Thx for the reminder about the leaves.

As soon as John's columbines are out of my seed starter (which should be in a couple of hours) I'm planting my fall broccoli. At least here this is the time to get the fall and winter crops going: all the coles especially. We barely have time for tomatoes or squash, but these cool-weather plants will provide greens all winter. I'll be planting them out somewhat before the fall rains start in mid-September.

I'm also going to plant some duck food. They're so spoiled on garden greens that I don't want to force a big change on them. So I'll put in more lettuce than we need and more kale (though ours is currently producing abundantly). I also have plenty of mizuna seeds, and they love that! And so on. Even if they don't grow much in the late fall and early winter, they'll stay fresh in the garden without my doing anything.

Anyway, that's my theory. Live and learn!

  2. Your broccoli looks great! I don't know when your last frost date is. Go to Johnny's seeds. They have a fall planting calculator available. I think that their schedule is a little early...but I could be wrong. They are the experts!

  3. Oh I love Columbines! They are so pretty!

Did you have some broccoli seedlings started or are you planting seed now?

Me too! Need to plant lots of seed lettuce for my winged friends! I read last night that someone gets alfalfa for his ducks during the winter. I thought that was a good idea too!

Love that... "Live and Learn!" Makes life exciting!

  6. Beautiful head! I'm with EG, however. I'd have to add food coloring.

  7. What a pretty head. I was out today picking side shoots. I don't know how the broccoli is surviving in the heat wave, but the side shoots are bigger than before.

  8. Hi there! I realize this is somewhat off-topic however
I had to ask. Does building a well-established blog like yours
take a lot of work? I am completely new to writing a blog however I do write in my journal daily.
I'd like to start a blog so I can share my personal experience and views online. Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or tips for brand new aspiring blog owners. Appreciate it!
