Harvesting Broccoli...

Garden Fresh Broccoli... YUM!
I started harvesting my broccoli this week.  It tastes SO good!  It's so much better than grocery store broccoli!

Woohoo... I finally get to participate in Daphne's Monday Harvest Reports!

Our "free range" Muscovy Ducklings are almost 6 weeks old!  Here's a photo that I just snapped... they're hiding under my truck in the shade.

  1. Toni, home grown veggies are the best. Aren't they? I am waiting in anticipation for the tomatoes to start ripening. That first bite of home grown tomato is always the best ever. My cucumbers and green peppers are coming along as well but will be about three to four more weeks before they start producing. I can hardly wait. My potatoes are starting to bloom so they will be setting on spuds and I'll be eating the best tubers in the city soon.

Have a great 4th. Stay cool and safe.

My brother-in-law's potatoes are starting to bloom too! Are you in zone 4 there?

  3. Your broccoli looks so yummy! I am going to try growing a fall crop. The ducks look cute all snuggled up together. Boy, do they grow up fast.

  4. I remember how surprised I was by homegrown broccoli's nutty sweetness.

  5. That is a great setup you have pictured. I hope to have a community garden plot either by the end of the season or next summer.
I'd like to set it up like yours.
Do you have weed blocking cloth under the gravel?
Did you lay the gravel over the whole area or only between beds?
What did you use for covering on the hoops?
    How deep are your beds?
Hope I haven't asked too many questions.

When would you plant a fall crop of broccoli?
Do you start them from seed?

  7. SwampCatNana, thank you! I love square foot gardening! This is my 3rd gardening season using this set up.

Do you have weed blocking cloth under the gravel?
    YES!

Did you lay the gravel over the whole area or only between beds?
My first season after getting set up was just dirt or mud when it rainned in between the beds. My big improvement last year was to lay landscape fabric down in the rows then add gravel over top of it. I LOVE THE GRAVEL!!!

What did you use for covering on the hoops?
I cover the hoops with plastic to protect from frost.

    How deep are your beds?
    I used 2x6 lumber.

I think that you would find this book to be very helpful as you get started in Square Foot Gardening: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1591862027/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=3251988851&ref=pd_sl_73ji9mqvek_b
