Oh my gosh, these carrots have been so good! And beet greens... I absolutely love them. As a matter of fact... I have discovered that I LOVE Greens! I also love Swiss Chard (it's my first time eating it! I decided to plant it after seeing how pretty it was on someone's garden blog)... I put it in my
chicken noodle garden soup for lunch!
Look... two tomatoes turning red... DARN... BER has struck...
Question Pepper Growers... I bought a 4-pack of jalapeno peppers at the nursery... but 2 of my 4 plants are NOT Jalapeno... What is this beautiful pepper?
Those look a little like Poblano/Ancho. I can't really tell. You know, there are so many varieties and they all look vaguely alike. The author of Gardening when it Counts has a rant about seed sources and nurseries. . .
ReplyDeleteAre they hot peppers?
As stefaneener said, it could be ancho/poblano chile pepper - or maybe cubanelle. Your carrots and beets look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your carrots look perfect! I am awaiting my first carrots, a short variety so that they would not have any problems growing in my 6" deep SFG boxes.
ReplyDeleteStefaneener & EG-thanks. Just googled ancho/poblano... looks just like that. Haven't tried one yet.
ReplyDeleteLIzSaumsiegle-these carrots are are mature at about 5 inches. Will look up the name next time I'm at the garden.
Toni, I'd like the name of those carrots, too! I love my Imperators, but they aren't nearly as perfect looking as your carrots are!
ReplyDeleteYour carrots and beets are just perfect, nice job! I agree that it is the shape of a ancho, ancho's are a very dark green color though.
ReplyDeleteGranny & LizSaumsiegle-the variety of Carrots that I'm currently harvesting is called: Sweet Treat Hybrid Zanahoria.
ReplyDeleteMy package is from Burpee. This is what it says on the back:
"Delicious easy to grow and packed with vitamins. Very sweet, deep orange, 5" Kuroda-type roots are slightly tapered with blunt tips. Excellent flavor and satisfying crunchy texture. Harvest in 70 days.
Wow! Those carrots and beets sure are pretty. Sorry about the BER.
ReplyDeleteLove your veggie pics! What do you plan for the beets? Do you have enough to pickle or do you can them? I have some in my sfg that are close to ready but my hubby is not too sure he is up for buttered beets. Me, I love them!
ReplyDeleteBeets are my favorite! YUM-oh. Beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous crop you got! Good work!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy-thank you for your kind words. I think that mostly we'll be eating what I harvest. I love beet greens!!! Do you eat them?
ReplyDeleteI didn't plant enough to can.
Those carrots are so pretty. I've been growing long ones and have liked them pretty well so far. I ought to get a nice short one like those. They work so much better in the garden.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what happened to my tomatoes. There seemed to be one red one on a Roma plant and I think a Moneymaker. And then they turned out to have BER ! Where as the green ones are ok. I wonder if there is something about BER which accelerates ripening. Although having said that I had plenty of green BER fruit earlier in the season. It seems to have tailed off now though thankfully !
ReplyDeleteHey Toni, beets are wonderful just roasted (like potatoes)in the oven. Love the combination of bright orange and purple in the first photo! I grew swiss chard last year for their beautiful stems too but never got to eat any as deer got to them right before a garden tour...argh!!
ReplyDeleteSquare foot gardening is an interesting concept. I had never heard of it before.
ReplyDeleteHi, the other Sally here. I'm sorry that you are getting blossom end rot, but you must be so thrilled about those carrots!
ReplyDeleteYou haven't posted in a while, hope you are having a well-earned vacation.
