Research on Winter Greens & Cold Frames

Where did I put my Eliot Coleman book?  I bought it last year... um... I'm ready to learn about 4 season garden!!!

I'm doing some research on growing greens this winter and on having a cold frame.   I have to admit this is a very different blog post for me... it's really more of a place holder for what I'm learning.

Here's a video that I've really enjoyed:

Winter Gardening Using Cold Frames

Cold Frame and Green House covering... this Solexx stuff sounds really neat!

Greens for Winter Harvest
The following greens are winter hardy:
Arugula, Kale, Chard, Spinach, Beet Greens, Collards, Mustard, Pac Choi, Mizun, Tatsoi

Here's a good article that I found on Greens for the winter!

  1. I always drool when I look at greenhouses like in the solexx videos. Smaller is probably better for me though.

  2. Here's what I remember from the Coleman book, very generally, for places that are very cold, when you don't have a greenhouse. He has a cold frame, but inside he essentially has another cold frame and floating row covers - several layers of protection. He does keep several foods alive through the winter, not growing but still alive and fresh. He says you have to be sensible about what you want to keep: carrots but not tomatoes, for example. And ready to eat, not needing to grow some more. You start them in the late summer so they're the right maturity to winter over. Most important, he says, is that you need to live at a latitude that gets adequate sun in the winter. He's in Maine, at the same latitude as southern France, and it's quite enough. (We're at the same latitude as Paris, and that is also sufficient. You must be fine in WY.)

  3. I grew bok choy and it went to seed way too fast so maybe growing it in the winter you will have better success. It was delish in stir fries though. Good luck! I will keep checking back to see how your experiment goes.

  4. My husband I want to also build cold frames! We've been on the lookout for salvaged windows that we can recycle. Good luck with your cold frames, I can't wait to read about the progress.

  5. Hi Rosey-I love bok choy too!

Meems hope you find some windows. On one video that I watched yesterday I saw that someone had recycled a shower door for their cold frame!

    Thanks Peg!

I would love one of those Solexx greenhouses too Daphne! I've got room for a huge one... but....
