Strawberry, lettuce, radish Harvest!

I walked by the strawberry patch and noticed bunches of ripe strawberries! This is our first year to have such a grand harvest!

While I was picking... I had a little SURPRISE!!!

Out jumped a hoppy thing.. a Wyoming toad perhaps....

He jumped on my toe then out of the strawberry patch!

I'm so excited about my harvest today... because we're having a small family gathering... and I picked 2 heads of lettuce, 1/2
dozen or so icicle type radishes... and we have these delicious strawberries to enjoy!

Oh... we'll be enjoying grilled burgers... from the steer that our family raised!

Bolting...
My leaf lettuce, arugula, and spinach are all bolting now... However the baby Romaine seems to be doing fine!

  1. WOW so much strawberries! How many straberry plants do you have in your patch? I have 3 and I can only harvest about 2-3 a day

  2. Hi Cynthia!
I have NO idea how many plants I have now! I originally started with maybe a dozen... sorry can't remember for sure... But the patch is now 3 years old... and finally mature enough to set some good fruit!

This year I thru down some peat moss in the spring. I don't know if that had any effect on our wonderful harvest.

  3. Ooooh, those yummy strawberries! I put in 25 plants just this year, so Mr. H and I have to take turns enjoying them, as we don't get many at one time. I actually picked enough today that we'll both get some in a fresh fruit salad tomorrow!

That toad is the cutest thing. I had a toad in my garden at my previous house, and I just loved him.

  4. OOoooh peat moss huh? I'll be sure to remember that for next year. I'm excited cuz my strawberry plants are sending out runners already :) I hope my patch doubles in size next year. Does it need to be covered at all for the winter?

  6. Cynthia-I have never covered my patch with anything. They seem to be very hardy as it can get down to -30 F here! But, this patch is in the ground NOT in a SFG!!!

  7. Sue-Thank you... they sure do taste good!
Ribbit-I hope to have enough to make jam.
Granny-I wish that I had a toad in my SFG! He sure did surprise me!
Cynthia-it's amazing how fast strawberry plants shoot out runners and grow new plants! My patch has really sprawled all over... wish that I had put in walking paths... now it's kind of hard to get in there and harvest all the berries... I have to be very careful not to step on berries!
