Bush Beans... what's happening to the leaves?

Overall my SFG is doing very well! I'm having a ball watching all the plants grow. Seems like every day brings something new!

Bush Bean... trouble...

Then... I walked over to my bush bean 4x4 bed. I noticed some kind of leaf damage yesterday on some of the plants. It's happening to the leaves that are closest to the soil.
Mostly the bottom set of leaves are getting brown spots... then the leaves are turning yellowish... and dying... : (
Today, I'm concerned because it seems to be spreading.
Here's a good example of what I'm talking about... What the heck? I don't see any pests in that bed.
Any ideas on what I should do?

Supper time Update ...
OK... I did some research (what would we do without Google?) and I think that my problem has to do with my plants drying out a bit. We went from unusually moist/cool to our more typical... hot/dry weather. And I think that my beans just got dried out a bit!

  1. I'll be interested to see what the problem is. My beans were gorgeous 3 days ago, now the leaves have huge splotches all over them. I thought maybe the heat got em. I've never had this problem. Hmmmmmm

  2. They either need some nitrogen, or the frequency of watering needs to be altered. Once the plants get bushy, it is very common for the lowest leaves to do just that, though.

  3. OK... thanks EG! We've just had a huge weather change. We went from a couple weeks of moisture to dry hot sun. I may not be getting enough water on them now... not sure.

  4. Sue, do the spots look like mine?

  5. Is your soil the kind where you need to add sulfur to liberate some of the nutrients? Ours was like that in Tucson, and adding it made all the difference. It's not a chemical additive in the usual sense - perfectly natural element that is missing. The Extension Service, though they can be rather chemical-oriented, can really help with these things, at least understanding the cause. And they may still test your soil for free. I know you have Mel's mix, so maybe this is irrelevant.

I *LOVE* your comments! Thanks for stopping by!
